How do you pronounce an abbreviation?

Guidelines

Use the common pronunciation or change them back to words.

  • CIA: C-I-A (pronounce each letter) see eye aye.
  • NATO: Two syllables 'Nay Toe”, not as letters N-A-T-O (en-aye-tee-oh).
  • UN: U-N (you-en) or expand it to United Nations.
  • New York, NY: New York, New York

If you have never heard the abbreviation spoken, ask someone who knows.

Usually each letter is given equal accent, unless you are purposely contrasting it with something similar.

"He's in the U.S., not the U.K." (emphasis on S and K).
