Main / Breaks between paragraphs

edit SideBar

An extra large space between paragraphs (sometimes with asterisks or some other marker in them) is a common technique used to signal a change of time or location to the visual reader. The listener can't see what you are looking at, so you need to alter the narration to adjust for the change.

  • Allow a distinct pause between those paragraphs. Also, consider changing the pace a bit (if the last paragraph was being narrated slower, start a bit faster).
  • Keep this in the back of your mind when you are recording: Any time there is a transition in the book, consider taking a real break if you need one. Changes in your voice after your break will be much less noticeable to the listener when they occur between sections, chapters. Changes in your voice are most noticeable if they occur in the middle of some action.
