It is your book. Can you leave things out if you want to? You can, but if you do, be sure that you don't give the impression that it is unabridged.

Here are some ways to label your less-than-mirror-image audiobook.

  • Selections from: You skipped parts, but what's there is the same as the text of the printed book.
  • Audiobook version of: This is more free-wheeling. It implies that the print book is being used as an outline, not something that the author is reading. This is appropriate for non-fiction books where you want to emphasize or de-emphasize certain parts of the print book.
  • Read by the author, with a disclaimer. "I've taken some liberties when recording this book, to make it sound better for the listener. If you are reading along, you might notice the occasional difference."
