In the Arthur Conan Doyle story "The Adventure of the Dancing Men", the narrator (Watson) shows the reader a hand-drawing of hieroglyphic-like dancing men. Holmes held up the paper so that the sunlight shone full upon it. It was a page torn from a notebook. The markings were done in pencil, and ran in this way: -

Holmes examined it for some time, and then, folding it carefully up, he placed it in his pocketbook.
There are illustrations in several places in that story. Can an audiobook convey them? Probably not.
